Bergamot Essential Oil

Bergamot Essential Oil is one of my favorite oils even if only for the sole purpose of using it in tea. Luckily it has many more uses and benefits.

History of Bergamot Essential Oil

Bergamot is the most delicate of the citrus plants, requiring special climate and soil in order to thrive.

Italians have used Bergamot for years to reduce feelings of stress. They would also use it to soothe and rejuvenate skin. In Greece, the unripe fruits are used as sweetmeats, and are eaten by the spoonful as a dessert or with coffee.

Bergamot Essential Oil is unique among citrus oils due to its ability to be both uplifting and calming. This makes it ideal to help anxious and sad feelings. It is also purifying and cleansing for the skin while having a calming effect.

Uses and Benefits

  • Diffuse Bergamot Essential Oil in the classroom, at work, or at home for stress
  • Apply to the skin while showering to experience its calming aroma and enjoy its skin benefits.
  • Change regular tea to Earl Grey with Bergamot.
  • Apply to the feet before bedtime for a calming and relaxing massage.
  • Add one to two drops to your skin care cleanser.
  • Calming and soothing aroma
  • Provides skin purifying benefits
  • Frequently used in massage therapy for its calming benefits

Chemistry and Sourcing

As an oil in the citrus family, Bergamot oil includes the chemical component Limonene. Which is commonly known for its uplifting aromatic characteristics.

The uplifting nature of Bergamot’s chemical makeup is why it is frequently used in massage therapy. When diffused, the elevating chemical components can lower stress.

doTERRA sources Bergamot oil from Reggio di Calabria, Italy. Here Italian families have run bergamot orchards for decades. Unfortunately, economic downturn has caused many families to abandon their orchards.

However, through the doTERRA Co-Impact Sourcing® Initiative in Italy, families receive fair wages and work, and produce high quality bergamot fruit.

doTERRA Essential Oils

I recommend only one brand of essential oils. Please do not use these tips if you are going to go out and buy the cheapest brands that you can find.

When it comes to essential oils, you get what you pay for. There’s hardly any regulation on the essential oil market so you have to do your due diligence when purchasing oils.

After research, I fell on doTERRA. DoTERRA holds themself to the highest purity and safety standards on the market. Plus, they hold themselves to fair trade and sustainability practices.
