Douglas Fir Essential Oil

Douglas Fir is known for its use in Christmas and wintertime traditions, but the tree has much more to offer when used aromatically or applied topically.

Description

Douglas Fir is a conifer that grows natively throughout North America. This tall, evergreen fir tree is frequently used in the Christmas tree industry and also has a lemon-scented note that’s sweet and refreshing.

Douglas Fir has a unique chemical composition that’s particularly rich in beta-pinene, contributing to its ability to promote feelings of clear airways. Douglas Fir can also be used to purify the skin and promote a positive mood. Blending Douglas Fir with citrus oils will create an uplifting environment while freshening the air.

Try blending Douglas Fir oil with citrus essential oils like Citrus Bliss, or Lemon oil to produce a fresh aroma that can be used in homemade cleaning mixtures. For warm diffuser blends, mix Douglas Fir oil with spicy essential oils like Cinnamon.

Douglas Fir Uses and Benefits

  • Combine Douglas Fir with Wild Orange, Lemon, or Bergamot in a diffuser to freshen the air, uplift mood, and promote a sense of focus.
  • Add 1 drop to facial cleanser, bar soap, or body wash for added cleansing benefits and an invigorating aroma.
  • Diffuse 2–3 drops Douglas Fir with 2–3 drops Eucalyptus, or rub into hands and inhale deeply to promote feelings of clear airways and easy breathing.
  • Combine with 1-2 drops of Wintergreen for a relaxing massage experience.

Sourcing of Douglas Fir Essential Oil

Though the Douglas Fir is native to North America, it has become an invasive and aggressive species in New Zealand. There it threatens the surrounding landscape. Due to environmental factors, Douglas Fir trees grow 25 times faster in New Zealand than in North America. This makes it difficult to contain.

While it is fast-spreading and uncontrollable, this tree causes more serious problems for the landscape in New Zealand. The roots of the Douglas Fir cause the ground around the trees to become barren—making it impossible for other native New Zealand plants to grow. So originally brought to New Zealand for the lumber industry, the Douglas fir is now an environmental threat to the landscape.

Using Douglas Fir trees for essential oil provides a more environmental alternative to simply cutting trees down. Through a responsible sourcing partnership, doTERRA is able to keep these trees from going to waste. Working with the New Zealand government, doTERRA provided an environmentally friendly solution to a serious problem.

doTERRA Essential Oils

I recommend only one brand of essential oils. Please do not use these tips if you are going to go out and buy the cheapest brands that you can find.

When it comes to essential oils, you get what you pay for. There’s hardly any regulation on the essential oil market so you have to do your due diligence when purchasing oils.

After research, I fell on doTERRA. DoTERRA holds themself to the highest purity and safety standards on the market. Plus, they hold themselves to fair trade and sustainability practices.

  1. I LOVE Douglas Fir!! I have a diluted roller with Douglas Fir, Wild Orange, Cypress, Cedarwood and Juniper Berry. It smells like a forest and is incredible for grounding and connecting back with the earth. I made another roller for my sister but it contains Green Mandarin instead of Wild Orange. Ahhh Douglas Fir smells heavenly to me! I did not know that about it’s sourcing!

  2. Also my new favorite deodorant is their Douglas Fir & Greek Orange! I want that to be my signature scent! 😍🌲
